It's over: The AP has called the election for Joe Biden
But ballots still need to be counted and states still need to certify their results.
After days of states carefully counting ballots, The Associated Press has *finally* called the presidential race in favor of former Vice President Joe Biden.
Ballots still need to be counted and each state still needs to certify its results, but barring any significant court intervention, the 2020 Presidential race is over.
What happens now?
Election day is now “election half-week,” and most people are TIRED. Like Steve Kornacki, a lot of folks have barely engaged in things that are not watching our news outlet of choice not calling the election but even then, is that it?
Joe Biden is poised for the role of President-Elect as mail-in ballots are being counted and state tallies have inched toward his side by an agonizing 0.1% at a time. It is important to remember who certifies elections (hint: it’s not cable news or legacy newspapers).
When will the presidential election be certified?
The process of vote-counting and certifying elections has always been long, even when the general public’s experience of it has been satisfyingly short and wrapped up in a neat bow. This race has been called but we’re also looking at other not-yet resolved races, runoffs, recounts and election claptrap.
What about state and local races?
This does not mean you should stop paying attention to state and local races. If you have a local or state newspaper in your community that you trust, follow along. State and local races can come down to hundreds, dozens, or even a single vote.
